Example 05

The touch-screen shack

No mouse. No keyboard on the desk. A large touch monitor in front of you, a Stream Deck to one side, a foot switch underneath, and the radio driven entirely by hand.

A lot of radio software was drawn for a mouse pointer: tiny spin boxes, right-click menus, controls that only appear when you hover. DX Pro was drawn for a finger from the start. Every control is at least 44 pixels, nothing depends on hovering, and the things you do most — tune, zoom, change band, transmit — are gestures and big targets rather than menus.

The layout

Big targets where your hand falls

The right-handed version: the VFO Wheel sits low and right where the hand rests, band and mode keys above it, PTT bottom-left under the other hand. Flip it for left-handed operating in seconds — it is just dragging boxes.

Widgets used

Everything a finger needs

Panadapter as a touch surface Available

Pinch to zoom, drag to move, tap a signal to tune to it, drag the passband. No zoom slider to hunt for.

VFO Wheel Available

A big on-screen knob made to be spun with a fingertip. Size it as large as you like — on a 27-inch screen it can be the size of your palm.

Bands and Mode & Filter Available

Finger-sized keys. Each band remembers where you left it, so one tap takes you back to the same spot.

3D terrain waterfall Available

The waterfall drawn as a landscape. On a big screen it is the view visitors ask about, and it shows the shape of an opening better than flat colour.

Transmit console Available

PTT tap-to-latch or hold. Latching means you do not have to keep a finger pressed on glass for a long over.

Pop-out windows Available

Any widget can go to its own window. Here the DX Cluster and TX Monitor Scope live on the second monitor, leaving the touch screen for things you touch.

Workspaces Available

Home, DX and Nets layouts, one tap apart. Each can be arranged differently for the job.

Themes and backdrops Available

Tron or Matrix, with animated canvas backdrops behind the widgets — because the shack is also a room you sit in.

How it plays out

A morning net, coffee in the other hand

08:55You tap the Nets workspace, then 40 on the Bands keys. The band stack puts you back on the net frequency where you left 40 metres last week. One tap on SR2 for voice and you are ready.

09:00The net opens. A station is a little off frequency; you drag the passband across to centre them without touching a menu. Someone else is weak, so you spread two fingers on the panadapter to zoom in and check whether it is them or the band.

09:12Your turn. Foot down on the switch, or tap PTT to latch it for a longer over and tap again to drop it. On the second monitor the TX Monitor Scope shows the mic level and ALC while you talk.

09:40The net closes. A spot appears in the popped-out cluster on monitor 2 — a station you have been after on 17 metres. Tap the spot; the receiver goes there. Spin the VFO Wheel a touch to clear an adjacent signal. Not once this morning did you reach for a mouse.

Hardware

Touch first, buttons for the rest

A Windows touch monitor

DX Pro runs on Windows 10 and 11, 64-bit. A large touch monitor makes the most of the finger-sized layout; a convertible laptop works the same way.

Works with Elgato Stream Deck

The built-in bridge puts DX Pro functions on physical keys — band changes, SR on and off, workspaces. Tactile buttons for things you press without looking.

HID foot switch

PTT on the floor via the Hardware Hub, bound with Learn mode in a few seconds.

MIDI controller

A knob or fader box for the Audio Mixer volumes if you prefer real faders to on-screen ones. Learn mode again: touch the control, move the fader.

Honest status
  • Everything in this layout Available — in today's pre-1.0 development builds.
  • FlexRadio In development — receive and panadapter now, transmit in development.
  • Mac and Linux desktop clients — not promised. DX Pro is a Windows application.

Put your finger on it

The live demo is built the same way — drag the widgets with your finger on a phone or tablet. One licence, £99, perpetual, for one machine.
